Almost unnoticed at the top of a hill just past the Oak St. Bridge in Waupaca's third ward sits one of Waupaca's historical landmarks - the former Soo Line railroad depot. For much of the city's existence the depot was an important part of the community. In 1907 after a fire destroyed the old building, the original Wisconsin Central spared no expense to build the current structure for this important tourist and shipping location. The depot was the first thing travelers saw when arriving in Waupaca. It was a place for families to say goodbye or be reunited. Visitors could take a train to Waupaca, ride a trolley to the Wis. Veteran's Home, Grand View Hotel, or boat dock where they could board a boat for their lake destination. Soldiers leaving for duty in two world wars were sent off by their loved ones. Eventually times changed and in January of 1965 Soo Line passenger service ended in Waupaca. The station continued to be used as an agent's office and section crew quarters until the new Wisconsin central purchased the railroad in 1987. Since then, the once important building has stood deteriorating, awaiting the day it would be demolished or rescued.

After four years of careful negotiations with, first, the Wisconsin Central, and then the Canadian National Railroad, the Waupaca Historical Society was able to purchase the building without having to move it off its current site. Many volunteer hours have already been spent cleaning up the grounds and stabilizing the building. Much more work remains to be done, but with a group of dedicated workers, over time, the beautiful stone building, with its three fireplaces and Spanish tile roof, will return to its former grandeur.

The River Ridge Trail passes by the depot along Oak St. and the granite quarry in Shambeau Park is just west of the depot grounds. A trail connecting the depot to the quarry has been partially brushed out and should be completed this year. Part of the connecting trail follows the old railroad siding that once served the quarry. History and railroad fans will have an interest in both sites. Plans are being formed to build a car barn to house the baggage car from Waupaca's early 1900's trolley line. It is to be located at the bottom of the hill on the depot grounds. A short piece of track will connect the barn to a replica of the open waiting platform that once stood in front of the Grand View. The River Ridge Trail could run along the other side of the Victorian style platform which will have a bench and historical kiosk. 2007 is the 100th anniversary of the construction of the depot and the 150th anniversary of the city of Waupaca. It is hoped that some of these projects can be completed in time to mark these milestones in the history of Waupaca.

If you wish to contribute toward restoration of the Depot, either financially or with your volunteer time, please contact the Waupaca Historical Society.  We would also love to hear from you if you have depot memories that you would like to share.  Please contact us at our mailing address or e-mail address listed at the bottom of this page.

View of the general waiting room before restoration.  The depot was heavily vandalized with graffiti both inside and out.  We were very grateful to receive a donation of construction tools.

Text Box: The photo below (lower left) shows the Operator's Desk in 2004 before restoration work began.  The photo on the right shows the Operator's Office as it looked in April, 2008.  Windows have been repaired, refinishing of the woodwork is underway, and plaster on the walls repaired and painted.  We used maple flooring that we salvaged from the old Waupaca Armory gym to replace the rotted and buckled office floor.

Text Box: We restored the ticket window based on old photos.  The grill, bottom sash, and glass were missing.  The person who owns the schedule board did not want to part with it, but he allowed us to measure it and trace the lettering so we could make an accurate reproduction.

Text Box: The Waupaca Area Model Railroaders restored the Waupaca Electric Light & Railway baggage car.  The trolley line ran from the depot to King and the Chain O' Lakes from 1899 to 1925.  The model railroaders donated the car to the Waupaca Historical Society in 2007.  We plan to construct a car barn on the depot grounds to preserve and display the car.
